Yasin Zia, leader of the Freedom Front of Afghanistan, has rejected the Taliban’s claims of “nationwide security” in Afghanistan, saying that armed opponents of the Taliban deliberately refrain from attacking civilians and creating insecurity among the people.

Zia added: “If we had acted like the Taliban did over the past 20 years, we could have disrupted the country’s security in a short time.”

Referring to the Taliban’s conduct during the past 20 years, he said the group repeatedly used suicide attacks, roadside bombings, and armed attacks, some of which resulted in civilian deaths and injuries. United Nations reports have also documented extensive civilian casualties resulting from fighting and attacks by groups opposing the previous government, including the Taliban.

During the republican period, government opponents also endangered travel between provinces by planting mines and explosive devices along roads and transportation routes. In some areas, these actions created fear and concern among the public and restricted people’s movement.
