A video circulating on social media shows scenes of people kissing the hand of Sirajuddin Haqqani, the Taliban’s interior minister, and money being distributed among some of those present. The release of these images has raised questions about the relationship between power, loyalty and the position of citizens under Taliban rule.
In the video, one of those present kisses Haqqani’s hand, while in another part, money is distributed among several people. However, it remains unclear where the money came from, why it was distributed, and whether there was any connection between the payments and the behaviour of those present.
Power and Accountability: What Is the Main Question?
The Ministry of Interior is responsible for public security. For this reason, the conduct of its officials and their interactions with the public can be examined in terms of accountability and responsibility.
Hand-kissing powerful officials and distributing money at public gatherings raises questions about the extent to which relations between officials and citizens are based on mutual respect and accountability, and what such practices communicate about the place of power in society.
The images alone are not enough to determine the purpose of the money distribution or the motives of those present. Clarifying these issues requires further information and verifiable explanations.
At a time when many Afghan citizens face poverty, unemployment and economic hardship, transparency regarding financial resources and the conduct of those in power is particularly important.
The question remains: to what extent can Afghan citizens demand accountability from those in power and obtain information about the financial resources and management of public institutions?
