In a video posted on her Instagram page, Asma Jawaheri says that since the Taliban returned to power, it has become possible to travel safely across all provinces of Afghanistan.
Referring to the security situation during the former republic, she raises the question of who was responsible for many of the bombings and acts of insecurity at that time. She adds that the same group that was fighting the republican government is now in power.
Jawaheri then asks what price the Afghan people have paid for the current level of security. According to her, the consequences include the deprivation of women and girls from education and employment, the large-scale migration of young people and professionals, growing poverty, and gender-, ethnic-, religious-, linguistic-, and regional-based discrimination.
She also questions whether the ability to travel between provinces and the construction of some roads can justify these widespread hardships. She argues that people should not remain silent while millions of girls are denied their right to education.
Jawaheri concludes by saying that “real security is not merely the absence of explosions; it exists when people can live with freedom, dignity, justice, and hope.” She also warns against normalizing the suffering of ordinary people.
