Lana Nusseibeh, a senior diplomat from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has been nominated for the position of the next Secretary-General of the United Nations.
According to Reuters, Nusseibeh said on Wednesday, October 21, that if elected, she would work to revive the UN’s role in resolving global crises through diplomacy.
She stressed that the organization should play a more active role in addressing international crises rather than merely observing them.
Nusseibeh previously served as the UAE’s ambassador to the United Nations for more than a decade.
Her nomination comes as the term of the current UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, is set to end on December 31, 2026.
The process of selecting Guterres’s successor is ongoing, and none of the candidates has so far secured the support of all five permanent members of the UN Security Council.
