Russia and Ukraine each released 270 people on Friday, October 23, as part of a prisoner-of-war exchange agreement.
According to Reuters, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that nine civilians were among those who returned to Ukraine. He added that most of the released military personnel had been held in captivity since 2022.
According to the report, some of the released military personnel had been captured during the battles for the city of Mariupol. Russia’s Ministry of Defence also said that the released Russian military personnel would receive medical and psychological care in Belarus before returning to Russia.
The exchange comes as the war between Russia and Ukraine continues. Prisoner-of-war exchanges remain one of the few areas of cooperation between the two sides during the conflict.
