Jeenbek Kulubaev, Kyrgyzstan’s foreign minister, has announced that his country has rejected a proposal by some European countries to accept Afghan and African migrants in exchange for providing employment opportunities in Europe for skilled Kyrgyz citizens.
Kyrgyz media reported on Tuesday, October 13, that Kulubaev raised the issue at a meeting of the parliamentary committee on international affairs, defense, security and migration.
According to Kulubaev, the Kyrgyz government does not accept the proposed conditions and does not intend to negotiate on that basis. He added that European countries can directly recruit skilled Kyrgyz citizens for employment.
The Kyrgyz foreign minister also said that a domestic labor shortage has prompted the government to reduce organized programs for sending citizens abroad for permanent employment.
As of the time of publication, the European countries that made the proposal and the number of migrants they were expected to accept had not been identified.
