Reports indicate that the Taliban have increased restrictions on the dress and behavior of male students at universities in Afghanistan. According to documents and media reports, some students have been required to sign written pledges committing to growing beards, wearing caps or turbans, and traditional perahan tunban clothing, as well as following Taliban directives.
The pledges distributed at some universities also include requirements such as attending congregational prayers, refraining from listening to music, complying with the rules of the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, and avoiding political activities. Media outlets have reported that within one month, more than 10,000 students at universities in western Afghanistan were confronted with such pledges.
It has also been reported that students at Kabul University have been asked to grow beards, not enter the university campus without a cap, and wear “Sharia-compliant and Afghan” clothing. Some students have described these regulations as pressure on individual freedoms and the educational environment.
These restrictions are being increased while there have previously been reports of pressure on school students to wear turbans and traditional clothing. Critics say that focusing on the appearance, clothing, and personal behavior of young people creates new challenges for school and university students in educational environments.
