Abdulrab Khalyani, a cleric, has criticized the performance of the Taliban government in Afghanistan, claiming that the country is facing the absence of a clear judicial system and a comprehensive legal framework under Taliban rule.
Khalyani said that under the Taliban, “extrajudicial trials” are taking place and that, in some cases, people are publicly executed by firing squad. Referring to the execution of a citizen in Herat Province, he criticized the way such punishments are carried out.
Strongly criticizing those who, according to him, carry out such punishments while wearing turbans, the cleric said: “People wearing the turban of the Prophet of Islam are carrying out extrajudicial killings.”
Khalyani’s remarks come as the manner in which judicial and public punishments are carried out in Afghanistan has, since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, repeatedly drawn reactions and criticism from human rights organizations and some critics of the Taliban government.
