Shahnaz Azizi, an Afghan bodybuilding athlete living in Switzerland, has posted a critical message on social media in which she tore up Afghanistan’s tricolor flag and described it as a symbol of a history filled with “discrimination, repression, and injustice.”
In her remarks, Azizi claimed that during different periods of history when Afghanistan’s tricolor flag was used, some non-Pashtun ethnic groups faced discrimination and killings. In this regard, she referred to issues including historical conflicts, the Durand Line, and settlement policies.
The Afghan athlete also criticized the performance of previous governments, particularly the former republican system, accusing it of election fraud, exploiting the position of women, and creating the conditions that led to the Taliban’s return to power.
Azizi also criticized some Afghans living in Western countries who use the tricolor flag and expressed her views regarding Afghanistan’s political and historical symbols.
Her action has sparked reactions among social media users and once again intensified the debate over the flags used in Afghanistan, national identity, and differing interpretations of the country’s contemporary history.
