Masoud Pezeshkian, the President of Iran, said on Tuesday, September 1, that if the United States returns to its commitments under the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding,” the Islamic Republic of Iran is also ready to take reciprocal action immediately.
Pezeshkian made these remarks at the 26th Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. He said that sustainable security cannot be achieved through confrontation, but rather requires mutual trust, respect for the sovereignty of countries, non-interference in internal affairs, and cooperation among governments.
Referring to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, the Iranian president said that the agreement was reached following negotiations and mediation by Pakistan and Qatar in June. However, according to him, less than two weeks after the agreement was signed, the United States failed to fulfill its commitments.
Pezeshkian added that if the United States returns to its commitments under the memorandum, Iran is also prepared to fulfill its own commitments. Reports of his remarks indicate that Tehran considers Washington’s alleged failure to honor its commitments as the reason for Iran’s reciprocal actions.
These remarks come as tensions between Iran and the United States have increased again, with the security of the Strait of Hormuz remaining one of the key points of disagreement between the two countries.
