India’s Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, officially resigned from his position on Saturday following weeks of widespread student protests and mounting political pressure.
According to Indian media reports, Pradhan announced his resignation in a post on the social media platform X. The resignation comes after thousands of students across India, particularly in New Delhi, staged demonstrations, sit-ins, and hunger strikes in protest over the alleged leak of questions from some of the country’s most important entrance examinations.
The protests, led by the movement known as the Cockroach Janata Party (Cockroach Movement), initially focused on the examination paper leak but gradually expanded to include broader demands such as reforms to the education system, greater government accountability, more employment opportunities, and improved economic prospects for young people.
Following the announcement of the minister’s resignation, thousands of protesters gathered in New Delhi celebrated the development, waving the Indian flag and describing it as a victory for their movement.
The Cockroach Janata Party wrote on its official X account, “Democracy has won.” The movement continues to call for comprehensive reforms to India’s examination system and compensation for the families of students who reportedly took their own lives following the examination paper leak.
Political analysts describe the protests as one of the most significant challenges faced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government in recent months.
