Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, the former president of Afghanistan, has emphasized the importance of the country’s various languages as a national asset, saying that all major languages of Afghanistan are “national.”
In a speech at a school bell-ringing ceremony marking the start of the 1400 academic year, Ghani said: “All of our major languages are national.” He added that Afghanistan is unique in the region in recognizing its languages as national languages.
The former Afghan president also emphasized that children should have access to education in their mother tongue and, alongside their mother tongue, learn other languages of the country as well.
Ghani further said that Afghanistan is not only the birthplace of the Dari language, but also the cradle of Pashto and Uzbek, adding that all these languages need investment and strengthening. He described languages as a means of communication among people and stressed the need to use linguistic diversity as an opportunity for connection and national unity.
In another speech, Ghani also described Turkmen, Uzbek, Dari, Pashto, Nuristani, Pashayi, and Balochi as Afghanistan’s “natural assets” and emphasized the need to strengthen them.
The official presidential archive also shows that during Ghani’s administration, investment in Uzbek, Balochi, Dari, Pashto, and other languages of the country was emphasized.
