At least 28 people, including 27 students and one teacher, have died and more than 30 others have been injured after the roof of a private school collapsed in Peshawar, the capital of Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The incident occurred on Thursday at the Al-Khair private educational centre in the Dera Colony area of Peshawar while students were attending classes. Reports indicate that most of the students who died were under 13 years old.

Officials at Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar said several injured people had been transferred to the facility and that some were in critical condition. As the death toll rose, concerns were also raised that the number of casualties could increase further.

According to rescue officials, after the roof of one of the building’s upper floors collapsed, lower sections of the structure also gave way, trapping several students under the rubble. Rescue teams were dispatched to the scene to recover victims and transport the injured to hospitals.

The exact cause of the building’s collapse has not yet been officially determined. Authorities said investigations had begun to establish how the incident occurred.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed sorrow over the deaths of the students and the teacher and instructed officials to provide the injured with the necessary medical care and accelerate rescue efforts.

The incident has once again raised concerns about building safety and compliance with construction standards in Pakistan, particularly in educational institutions.
