A 36-year-old British woman died while trying to rescue her two sons from strong currents near Bimini Island in the Bahamas. The incident occurred on Tuesday, 20 October, while the family was on holiday and snorkelling.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force said that, according to preliminary information, a powerful current swept both children away, prompting their mother to enter the water to save them. However, she was also caught in the sea current. Both children were subsequently rescued.
Police said that after the woman was pulled from the water, she was taken to the North Bimini dock, where resuscitation attempts were made. She was then transferred to a local clinic, but doctors confirmed her death.
Police said they do not currently suspect foul play in the incident. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
The UK Foreign Office also said it was in contact with local authorities and was supporting the woman’s family.
The incident comes as strong currents and high waves can pose dangers even to experienced swimmers. Investigations into the exact cause of the woman’s death are ongoing.
