Saudi Arabia has executed two Bangladeshi nationals, a man named Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and a woman named Siti Akter, on charges of committing an “immoral act” inside a mosque in Mecca. The sentences were carried out on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, in the Mecca region.
The Saudi Ministry of Interior said the two individuals were sentenced to death after being convicted in court. However, Saudi authorities have not released precise details of the alleged act, the name of the mosque, or the time of their arrest.
Claims circulating on social media that the two were husband and wife and were executed for kissing each other have not been independently verified. There is also no clear information available about whether they had access to legal representation or the details of their trial proceedings.
The Bangladeshi Consulate in Jeddah said it had not been informed of the executions before they were carried out and had sought clarification from Saudi authorities about the case. Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also requested official information about the case.
According to reports by Bangladeshi media, the names of the two individuals had previously appeared on a list of prisoners provided by Saudi authorities to Dhaka. However, the list reportedly contained no indication that their executions were imminent.
The case has drawn public attention in Bangladesh, where millions of citizens work and live in Saudi Arabia. Human rights organisations have also repeatedly raised concerns about the transparency of judicial proceedings, the right to legal representation, and the legal status of migrants in Saudi Arabia.
