US President Donald Trump says Saudi Arabia will probably accept Israel’s assistance in confronting Yemen’s Houthis. He also said that Saudi Arabia is pleased with support from Israel and the United States.
On Friday, October 16, while speaking to reporters on the grounds of the White House, Trump was asked whether Saudi Arabia should accept Israel’s help in confronting the Houthis in Yemen. He replied: “Yes, I think they will. Israel has helped Saudi Arabia a lot.”
He added that Saudi Arabia was pleased with the support provided by Israel and the United States. However, he did not provide further details about the nature or scope of the assistance Israel had previously provided to Saudi Arabia.
These remarks come as Saudi Arabia has faced attacks by Yemen’s Houthis against targets on its territory in recent days. According to published reports, King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and facilities belonging to the Saudi oil company Aramco have been among the targets. The attacks on Riyadh airport have resulted in several deaths and hundreds of injuries.
Trump also commented on the possibility of Saudi Arabia and Israel normalising relations through the Abraham Accords, saying that the prospect may now be more likely than before. The accords were established during his first presidency to normalise Israel’s relations with several Arab countries.
However, Trump did not announce any new formal agreement between Saudi Arabia and Israel in these remarks, nor did he provide specific details about the nature of any potential cooperation between the two countries. His comments reflect his view that Saudi Arabia may accept Israeli assistance, rather than confirm a new formal agreement between the two countries.
