Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesperson, has rejected claims that the group has access to international humanitarian aid or interferes in how the assistance is spent and distributed, saying that not even “one rupee” of the aid has been placed at the disposal of the Taliban administration.
Mujahid said on Saturday, September 5, at the sixth session of “Government in the Mirror of the Press” that humanitarian assistance provided by international organizations and aid agencies is independently managed and spent, and that the Taliban administration has no role in managing these funds.
He said: “Not even one rupee of this aid has reached the administration,” emphasizing that international organizations themselves are responsible for managing and spending the assistance.
The Taliban spokesperson also said that the group has not obstructed the activities of aid organizations. At the same time, he stressed that assistance must reach people in need and be spent transparently.
Mujahid warned that if aid organizations fail to comply with the principles required by the Taliban, they will face “punishment,” and that the Taliban will prevent what he described as “unnecessary spending.” He did not consider such action interference in the aid process.
These remarks come as some aid organizations and international bodies have previously accused the Taliban of interfering in the delivery of humanitarian assistance. According to recent reports, a number of humanitarian programs have also been suspended following alleged interference.
Mujahid also called on the international community to increase its assistance to organizations operating in Afghanistan, saying that the Afghan people continue to need humanitarian aid.
