The UK government has urged families to keep enough drinking water and food at home to meet their needs for three days in an emergency. The recommendation is part of the “Be Ready” campaign, which was launched to help people prepare for events that could disrupt daily life and essential services such as electricity, water, telephone and internet services.
According to the guidance, each person needs around three litres of drinking water per day. Therefore, nine litres of water should be set aside for each person for three days. Additional water should also be stored for cooking and washing. Food supplies should have a long shelf life and be suitable for consumption without refrigeration or cooking.
Items recommended for keeping at home include a flashlight and spare batteries, a battery-powered or hand-cranked FM radio, a power bank, blankets, warm clothing, a first-aid kit, essential medicines, hygiene supplies, cash and copies of important documents. Families with babies or pets should also consider their food requirements.
The UK government has stressed that families do not need to buy all these items at once. Instead, they can first check what they already have at home and gradually obtain essential supplies during their regular shopping. The aim of the guidance is to help families meet their needs for several days in the event of temporary disruptions to essential services.
Events such as storms, floods, wildfires and cyberattacks may disrupt essential services. The guidance is intended to help people prepare for emergencies and does not mean that a specific crisis is predicted to occur in the near future.
