The body of Ali Khamenei, the former Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, was transferred to Najaf, Iraq, on Wednesday for the continuation of funeral ceremonies, attended by hundreds of thousands of mourners.
According to Iranian and international media reports, the funeral procession began at the Imam Ali Shrine in Najaf. The body was then taken to Karbala for additional religious ceremonies. Iranian officials said that after the ceremonies in Iraq conclude, Khamenei’s body will be returned to Iran and is scheduled to be buried in the city of Mashhad on Thursday.
As of the time of publication, the burial in Mashhad had not yet taken place, and the funeral ceremonies in Iraq were still ongoing.
