A video circulating on social media appears to show individuals affiliated with the Taliban subjecting a young man to a summary public trial and forcing him to confess in front of a crowd. In the footage, the young man is also seen, apparently under pressure, chanting the slogan, “Long live the Taliban.”
Critics of the Taliban argue that even if a person is accused of committing a crime, summary trials and forced confessions violate the principles of due process and internationally recognized human rights standards.
At the same time, some Taliban opponents claim that rising unemployment, poverty, business closures, and capital flight from Afghanistan have pushed many young people toward illegal activities out of economic hardship.
These critics also allege that, apart from Taliban members, a large portion of Afghanistan’s population is facing severe poverty and difficult living conditions, with many families struggling to secure daily food and other basic necessities.
