A video circulating on social media shows a man of unknown identity being detained by Taliban forces.
In the video, a Taliban member asks the detained man why he intended to bring “destruction” to Afghanistan. In response, the detained man claims that he was supposed to go to Ukraine to fight, rather than fight in Afghanistan.
He says he was supposed to travel to Ukraine and take part in the war in exchange for receiving $5,000. He also says that the weapon seized from him during his arrest was the same weapon he had been carrying.
However, as of the publication of this report, the identity of the man, the exact time and location where the video was recorded, and its original source remain unclear. The claim that the man was supposed to be sent to Ukraine in exchange for $5,000 has also not been independently verified.
Statements made by detainees in videos released by armed groups may also have been made under pressure or coercion. Therefore, such statements cannot be treated as established facts without independent evidence.
