Mufti Lotfullah Hakimi, the Inspector General of the Taliban’s Ministry of Defense, said in an interview that Dari and Pashto are the official languages of Afghanistan, but that Pashto is the country’s only national language.

Hakimi added that, contrary to the view that both Dari and Pashto are national languages, he believes that Pashto is the national language, while Dari and Pashto are the official languages of Afghanistan.

These remarks come as Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada previously prohibited discrimination and distinctions between the Persian and Pashto languages, saying that violators would be referred to the courts and punished.

The Taliban official’s latest remarks regarding the status of Dari and Pashto come amid ongoing debate in Afghanistan over linguistic rights and the status of the Persian language in the country.
