Another fire at the Islam Qala Customs in Herat province has raised serious concerns about the protection of traders’ and drivers’ assets, as well as the management and firefighting facilities available at the customs point.

One driver, who did not want his name disclosed, says his entire investment was a tanker, which was destroyed in the fire. He accused customs officials of negligence and called for a serious investigation into how the fire started and spread.

The driver says customs officials should be held accountable for the losses suffered by people and that, if negligence or failure by individuals is established in the incident, the responsible officials should face legal action.

He also called on customs officials to provide clear explanations, rather than remain silent, about how traders’ and drivers’ property is protected and what facilities are available to control fires.
