Ali al-Zaydi, the prime minister of Iraq, announced on Thursday, October 1, 2026, that the process of addressing weapons outside the control of the state has begun and, according to a specific roadmap and timetable, must be completed by June 30, 2027, at the latest.
Al-Zaydi said the process aims to fulfill constitutional obligations and ensure that decisions regarding war and peace remain solely within the authority of the state’s legal institutions, with no military action taking place outside the state framework.
The Iraqi prime minister also said his government would act, in accordance with the constitution, to fully disarm non-Iraqi armed groups operating on Iraqi territory in order to ensure the country’s security, stability, and control of its borders.
He added that the Iraqi government would begin purchasing a complete air defense system to strengthen the country’s security capabilities. Al-Zaydi also announced that legislation concerning the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) would be pursued, saying the force’s position within Iraq’s security structure must be defined under the command of the commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
The announcement was issued one day after the official end of the U.S.-led international coalition’s mission in Iraq.
