Sami Sadat, leader of the United Afghanistan Front, has granted Abdul Basir Achakzai, one of the front’s commanders, the rank of “Brigadier General” while abroad. The move has drawn reactions and criticism from some critics.

Sadat announced on his X account that the rank was granted in recognition of Abdul Basir Achakzai’s services and activities, as well as those of the forces under his command, against the Taliban.

He also praised Abdul Basir Achakzai’s family, saying that five of the commander’s brothers were killed during the war.

The move comes as Sami Sadat and a number of members of the United Afghanistan Front are outside Afghanistan, while the front currently has no territorial control or formal military structure inside Afghanistan under the Taliban.

Some critics have criticized the granting of military ranks outside Afghanistan, saying that Taliban opponents who left the country are now assigning military ranks and positions to their members from abroad.

Some social media users have also said critically: “You have fled the country, and now in exile you are giving each other ranks.”

However, Sami Sadat has described the move as recognition of Abdul Basir Achakzai’s military service.

The United Afghanistan Front had previously announced the launch of military operations against the Taliban, but details regarding the scope of the front’s activities and operations inside Afghanistan have not been independently verified.
