Markus Lammert, spokesperson for the European Commission, has stated that discussions with the Taliban have focused on the return of Afghan nationals who have been convicted of serious crimes in European countries or are considered security threats by relevant authorities.

Lammert said that each European Union member state independently reviews individual cases and makes its own decisions regarding deportation or repatriation.

According to him, the authority to assess and decide on such cases lies with the member governments.

These remarks come as the issue of returning Afghan migrants from European countries has, in recent months, become a key topic of discussions between European officials and the Taliban.
