August 15: Mohammad Dad Muhibi, a journalist, has described August 15 as one of the darkest days in Afghanistan’s modern history, saying that the collapse of the republican government on this day in 2021 dramatically changed the lives of millions of Afghan citizens.
Muhibi said that following the flight of Ashraf Ghani, the former president of Afghanistan, and the Taliban’s entry into Kabul, the republican system collapsed, leaving widespread consequences for the country’s political, social, and economic conditions.
According to him, the consequences of this transformation are not limited to restrictions imposed on the education and employment of women and girls. Journalists, former members of the security forces, and many other citizens have also faced security, economic, and social difficulties.
The journalist added that Afghanistan’s media outlets have also faced serious challenges in the years since the collapse of the republic, and a number of journalists and media activists have left the country because of the prevailing conditions.
Muhibi emphasized that he does not view August 15 merely as a political change, but as an event that altered the course of life for millions of Afghans and whose consequences continue to this day.
He added that journalists have a responsibility to accurately and impartially reflect the realities of society and to be the voice of the people. Mohebi concluded by raising the question of where Afghanistan is headed in the future.
