Zarqa Yaftali, an Afghan women’s rights and girls’ education activist, has been named the winner of the “A Future Possible Awards” in the “The Advocate” category, presented by the US-based organization NationSwell. The award recognizes her work in advocacy and raising awareness of social issues, particularly women’s and children’s rights.
On Thursday, October 22, 2026, NationSwell announced the winners of the inaugural edition of the awards. A total of 12 individuals were selected across 10 categories, including innovation, advocacy, community mobilization, leadership, and creating lasting change. Yaftali was selected in the “The Advocate” category, which recognizes people working to raise public awareness of important social issues and draw attention to ways of addressing them.
Born in Badakhshan Province, Yaftali has spent years advocating for women’s and children’s rights and supporting Afghan girls’ access to education. She is the founder and president of the Women and Children’s Legal Research and Advocacy Network and currently lives in Canada.
The award announcement comes as women and girls in Afghanistan face widespread restrictions under Taliban rule, particularly in access to education. Girls are barred from continuing their education beyond grade six, while women are prohibited from attending universities. These restrictions limit not only educational opportunities but also professional development, economic independence, and women’s participation in society.
Zarqa Yaftali’s achievement highlights the potential and capabilities of Afghan women to reach important positions in academic and social fields. When women and girls have access to education and equal opportunities, they can develop their talents, advance in different fields, and achieve success. Denying women an education means overlooking abilities that could play a vital role in the progress of families and society.
At a time when many Afghan girls are denied access to schools and universities despite their interest and talent, providing them with educational opportunities remains essential to Afghanistan’s future. Every woman who gains the opportunity to learn and progress can inspire others and contribute to building a more informed and capable society.
The award recipients are expected to be honored at NationSwell’s annual summit in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the United States. Founded in 2013, NationSwell works on social impact initiatives and collaborates with companies, charitable foundations, and nonprofit organizations.
