Khadija Amin, an Afghan journalist and women’s rights activist, has received the “Lives for Asylum” award at the 10th edition of the Spanish Commission for Refugees (CEAR) Awards. The award recognizes her efforts to defend the right to asylum and raise awareness of the situation of women seeking refuge.

The awards ceremony was held on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, in Madrid, Spain. The Spanish Commission for Refugees presents these awards to individuals and organizations working to support refugees and defend the right to asylum.

Khadija Amin was relocated to Spain after the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in August 2021. Before leaving the country, she worked as a journalist and news presenter at Afghanistan’s national television broadcaster. Since her departure, she has continued her efforts to highlight the situation of Afghan women and the challenges faced by refugees.

According to information published by the award organizers, Amin currently serves as the head of the “Hope for Freedom” association (Esperanza de Libertad). The association works to provide Afghan women and girls with access to education and entrepreneurship opportunities.

During her exile, Amin has spoken about her experiences of leaving Afghanistan and being separated from her three children, alongside her media work and advocacy efforts. Through her activities, she seeks to draw international attention to the situation of women seeking refuge and the restrictions affecting the lives of women and girls in Afghanistan.

At the 10th CEAR Awards, other recipients included the Asturian programme supporting victims of violence in Colombia, the theatre production “14.4,” and the journalistic project “Journeys: The Long Road of Migrant Children.” The organization also paid special tribute to the human rights work of Francisco Solans, a Spanish lawyer who died this year.

The award has once again drawn attention to the role of Afghan journalists in exile and their efforts to highlight the circumstances of women, refugees, and people forced to leave their countries because of insecurity and restrictions.
