August 31, 2026 — Australia — Jahanzeb Wisa, an Afghan human rights activist and freelance journalist, expressed concern over the situation of the people of Afghanistan, particularly women and girls, during the “Peace Cup” in Australia and called for increased humanitarian and international support for Afghans at risk.
The event was organized by the United Nations Youth Association in Australia, in cooperation with a number of organizations, institutions, and various communities. Dozens of young people, academics, students, social activists, representatives of different communities, and guests from various states of Australia attended the event. Several members of the Queensland State Parliament, representatives of the United Nations, and officials from civil society and social organizations also participated in the program.
Wisa, who was invited by the organizers to represent Afghanistan, spoke about the situation of Afghan women and girls and identified existing restrictions in education, employment, sports, social participation, and fundamental freedoms as major concerns.
During the event, he also displayed a collection of images and materials related to the situation of Afghan women and girls. According to him, the collection included images of women active in the media, social activists and female athletes, as well as girls who have been deprived of continuing their education in schools and universities.
The human rights activist called on members of the Australian Parliament, representatives of the United Nations, and civil society organizations to play a more active role in supporting the people of Afghanistan, particularly women and girls, and to advocate for their access to education, humanitarian assistance, and fundamental rights.
Wisa also called on relevant officials and institutions to advocate with the Australian government for increased humanitarian support and the provision of more opportunities for humanitarian visas for Afghans at risk, particularly women and girls.
In another part of his speech, he emphasized the situation of Afghans living in Pakistan, Iran, and other countries who are waiting for their humanitarian cases to be processed, and called for the review of these cases to be accelerated and for greater support to be provided to these individuals.
The event was held under the slogan “Let Afghan Girls Learn,” and Wisa called on participants to stand alongside Afghan women and girls and raise their voices in international forums to prevent their situation from being forgotten.
