Representatives of 44 countries, the European Union, and the United Nations have strongly condemned what they described as the “continued and systematic suppression of women” in Afghanistan in a joint statement.
The statement was issued alongside a United Nations Security Council meeting on the situation in Afghanistan. The signatories expressed concern over restrictions imposed on the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan and called for their fundamental rights to be respected.
Italy’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations also said that the country’s participation in the joint statement is part of Italy’s national approach to protecting women’s rights through multilateral cooperation from 2025 to 2029.
The United Nations and the European Union have previously expressed concern over widespread restrictions imposed on women and girls in Afghanistan.
