Street Vendors Express Frustration Over Taliban Municipality in Kabul; Handcarts Destroyed and Financial Pressure Mounts
Local sources in Kabul say that a number of street vendors, particularly in District 1, have expressed growing dissatisfaction with the actions of the Taliban-run municipality.
In a video that has circulated widely on social media, a street vendor claims that municipal personnel destroyed his handcart and completely ruined the raisins he was selling.
Speaking in the video, the young vendor criticized the situation, saying: “What are we supposed to do? Even honest work is no longer possible. If this continues, people will be forced into theft and even killing.”
According to local sources, the Taliban municipality has designated specific locations where street vendors are permitted to operate. However, these locations are reportedly far from busy commercial areas and attract too few customers to provide vendors with a sustainable income.
Sources also state that street vendors in Kabul are required to pay AFN 6,000 per month in rent and municipal taxes. Vendors say that earnings from these designated locations are often insufficient to cover even their daily expenses, forcing some to pay the monthly fees out of their own pockets.
According to the sources, complaints by street vendors about the performance of the Taliban municipality in Kabul are not new. Similar grievances have been raised repeatedly over the past several years.
