The United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child has called for the immediate prohibition of all actions that violate children’s rights, following the approval and endorsement of the Taliban’s “Regulation on the Separation of Spouses.” The committee expressed concern that the regulation implicitly recognizes child marriage and urged the Taliban to explicitly and unambiguously ban child marriage.
The Committee on the Rights of the Child also emphasized that the Taliban must restore the rights of girls to education, protection, equality, and full participation in society, in accordance with Afghanistan’s international obligations, the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and its Optional Protocols.
