A new video attributed to Taliban members has been circulating on social media, showing one of the group’s members setting fire to several pairs of baggy trousers commonly known as “Balochi” trousers.
At the same time, these Taliban members announced that from now on, if men are seen wearing baggy “Balochi” trousers, the garments will be removed from them and burned.
The release of the video has sparked a wave of criticism and ridicule on social media. Many users argue that while Afghanistan is grappling with poverty, unemployment, and an economic crisis, Taliban members are focusing on social restrictions and citizens’ clothing choices instead of addressing the country’s pressing problems.
A number of critics have also described the move as another example of growing restrictions on personal freedoms, saying it is inconsistent with the current needs and priorities of Afghan society.
