Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s acting foreign minister, met and held talks with Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan, in Kabul on Saturday, September 5.
The Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that the two sides discussed the current situation in Afghanistan, existing opportunities in various sectors, and issues that could contribute to the development of relations between Afghanistan under Taliban administration and the United States.
According to the statement, Amir Khan Muttaqi claimed during the meeting that Afghanistan has made “practical progress” in stability, security, economic growth, and self-sufficiency, and now has a favorable environment for investment.
The Taliban Foreign Ministry also said that Zalmay Khalilzad praised the security and stability situation and progress made in reconstruction, and shared his views with Muttaqi on developing relations and constructive engagement between Afghanistan and the United States.
Khalilzad has not yet officially commented on the purpose of his visit to Kabul or the details of the meeting.
The meeting comes as Taliban officials have emphasized in recent weeks their desire to improve and normalize relations with the United States and have called on Washington to facilitate the expansion of political and economic ties with Kabul.
