Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Taliban government, said in response to the final communiqué of the Ninth Ministerial Conference on Women of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) that the Taliban administration does not accept the “dictates” of organizations which, according to him, are influenced by Western values.
Mujahid stated that the Taliban believe women’s rights in Afghanistan are ensured according to their interpretation of Islamic law (Sharia) and that they do not accept the views and demands of international organizations that they consider inconsistent with Islamic values.
His remarks came after the women ministers of OIC member states, during their recent meeting in Islamabad, once again expressed concern over the continued restrictions on Afghan women and girls in education and employment. They also called for the protection of fundamental rights, including the rights to education, work, and participation in society.
