Mohammad Mohaqiq, leader of the Islamic Unity Party of the People of Afghanistan and a member of the Supreme Council of National Resistance for the Salvation of Afghanistan, says he does not believe that differences between the Taliban’s opponents and the group can be resolved through negotiations.
Speaking at a virtual meeting on Sunday, 26 Mizan, marking the eighth anniversary of the killing of General Abdul Raziq Achakzai, the former Kandahar police chief, Mohaqiq said that over the past five years, the Taliban’s opponents had pursued negotiations with the group at the request of the international community and regional countries.
According to him, during this period, the Supreme Council of National Resistance for the Salvation of Afghanistan has pursued negotiations with the Taliban alongside military resistance, while taking certain considerations into account.
Mohaqiq added that if negotiations fail to produce results, the council reserves the option of taking military action against the Taliban.
These remarks come as groups opposed to the Taliban hold differing views on how to end the group’s rule and shape Afghanistan’s political future.
