Nagina Mehrayar, an Afghan-origin woman and candidate for the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, won the local election in Hanover, Germany, securing 1,269 votes.

According to Afghanistan International, Mehrayar won on Sunday, September 13, securing 53.8 percent of the votes for the party’s candidates and directly gaining a seat on the Hanover Regional Council.

Mehrayar’s candidacy for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party had previously sparked widespread reactions, particularly among some Afghan users on social media. The party is known for its hardline positions on immigration and asylum and is described by critics as anti-immigrant.

Mehrayar had previously responded to the criticism by saying that joining the party was a personal decision and that others should not interfere in her political choice. She has also supported some of the party’s policies, including the deportation of migrants who do not have the right to remain.
