More than 60,000 Canadians have signed a petition asking the government of this country to expel Pete Hoekstra, the United States ambassador in Ottawa, due to what has been described as “interference in Canada’s internal political affairs.”
Reports indicate that the number of signatories of this petition had reached nearly 60,000 by the morning of Wednesday, August 12, and then crossed the 60,000 signature mark. After exceeding the required threshold, this petition is to be presented in the House of Commons this fall by Elizabeth May, the leader of Canada’s Green Party.
In this petition, Hoekstra is accused of making statements that, according to its authors, have weakened Canada-U.S. diplomatic relations and, through repeated interference in Canada’s political discourse, are inconsistent with diplomatic principles.
Among the criticized points are Hoekstra’s remarks about Canada’s political climate, his criticism of Canadian officials for describing Washington’s tariff policies as a “trade war,” and also his criticism of some Canadian officials for discouraging citizens of this country from traveling to the United States.
