Hamid Karzai, the former president of Afghanistan, has emphasized on the occasion of the International Day of the Girl that the country’s growth and development depend on empowering girls and providing them with educational opportunities at all levels. He has once again called for the reopening of schools and universities to girls.

On Sunday, October 11, Karzai said in a post on the social media platform X that the International Day of the Girl serves as a reminder of society’s responsibility toward girls. He called on everyone not to neglect the empowerment of girls while supporting boys.

He said Afghanistan must pay greater attention to empowering girls to achieve growth and development. According to him, this goal can be achieved by providing full educational opportunities and enabling girls to continue their studies through higher education.

The former Afghan president expressed hope that schools and universities would reopen to girls as soon as possible, allowing them to serve the people and their country through their knowledge, expertise, and skills and contribute to Afghanistan’s progress.

Karzai also referred to Afghanistan’s cultural heritage and the respect its people have for women and girls. He emphasized their status, achievements, and courage, saying that the people of the country proudly speak of them at national and international gatherings.

The International Day of the Girl is observed annually on October 11. This year’s observance comes as the Taliban, after returning to power in August 2021, halted girls’ education above the sixth grade and banned women from attending universities in December 2022. These restrictions remain in place.
