Local Taliban authorities in Takhar province have announced that five miners were killed after a gold mine collapsed in Chah Ab district.

Qari Naqibullah Masroor, spokesperson for the Taliban’s Takhar Police Command, said on Saturday that the incident occurred in the Shah Mastan area of Chah Ab district. He did not provide further details about the exact time of the incident or the cause of the mine collapse, saying that additional information would be released later.

The incident occurred only a few days after a similar accident in the same district. Earlier this week, 10 miners were trapped under debris at a gold mine in the Samti area and were rescued alive after about two days of efforts by rescue teams.

Mining in Afghanistan, particularly gold mining in the northern parts of the country, is often carried out using traditional methods and without adequate safety standards. In recent years, numerous cases of mine collapses, gas poisoning, and explosions have been reported, resulting in the deaths of dozens of workers.

Afghanistan has extensive mineral resources, including gold, copper, iron, coal, and precious stones. However, a lack of safety equipment and adequate oversight continues to expose workers in the sector to serious risks.
