France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that technical talks have begun with the Taliban to facilitate the return of some Afghan nationals who are living in France without legal residency and are considered by French authorities to pose a threat to public security.

A spokesperson for the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the aim of the talks is to facilitate the direct return of these individuals to Afghanistan. According to the spokesperson, France, like several other European countries, is pursuing the matter through technical contacts with the Taliban.

French officials have stressed that the talks do not represent a change in France’s position toward the Taliban and that no formal diplomatic relations have been established between the two sides. The French Embassy in Kabul also remains closed.

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the process does not include women or asylum seekers and focuses on individuals considered by French authorities to pose a threat to public security.

However, the exact number of people who may be included in the process has not been announced. The spokesperson for the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs referred journalists to the country’s Ministry of the Interior for further information on the matter.

The move comes as several European countries are also seeking to facilitate the return of Afghan migrants who lack legal residency.
