Marshal Abdul Rashid Dostum, leader of the National Islamic Movement of Afghanistan, has responded to recent remarks by Atta Mohammad Noor, saying that those who do not have the ability to stand against the Taliban should at least remain silent and not criticize those who are fighting against the group.

Dostum wrote on his X account that remaining silent in such a situation, according to a saying of the Prophet of Islam, is the “lowest and weakest degree of faith.”

The remarks come as Atta Mohammad Noor, former governor of Balkh and one of the leaders of Jamiat-e Islami Afghanistan, had said that guerrilla warfare requires a clear strategy and plan.

In a message addressed to opponents of the Taliban, Atta Mohammad Noor said that they should not send young people to their deaths “for the pleasure of foreigners and the pursuit of fame.” His position has drawn reactions and criticism from some opponents of the Taliban.

These differing views have once again highlighted disagreements among some Taliban-opposition figures over how to fight the group. While Dostum has emphasized continuing the struggle and supporting those who are fighting against the Taliban, Atta Mohammad Noor has emphasized the need for a strategy and preventing human casualties without a plan.

The history of political disagreements among Taliban-opposition leaders has also contributed to the sensitivity surrounding these remarks in Afghanistan’s political environment.

However, the extent to which these disagreements will affect the activities of Taliban opponents and how the conflict will continue will require further developments to assess.
