Mohsen Zanganeh, a member of Iran’s Islamic Consultative Assembly, has emphasized expanding economic and trade relations with Afghanistan, describing Chabahar Port as a key route for transporting Afghan goods and providing the country with access to open waters.
According to Zanganeh, expanding economic and transit cooperation between Iran and Afghanistan could help increase trade between the two countries. The issue comes amid trade tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan and the closure of border crossings, which have increased attention to alternative routes for transporting goods.
As a landlocked country, Afghanistan depends on transit routes through neighboring countries for its imports and exports. Chabahar Port, located in southeastern Iran on the Gulf of Oman, is considered one of Afghanistan’s options for accessing open waters and regional and international markets.
However, the extent to which Afghan traders use this route depends on transportation costs, transport infrastructure, customs facilitation, and regional trade conditions.
