In its latest travel advisory, the Canadian government has urged its citizens to avoid all travel to Afghanistan, describing the country’s security situation as still “highly unstable and dangerous.”
Canada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said security threats in Afghanistan include terrorist attacks, armed conflict, kidnapping, crime, and the risk of arbitrary arrest and detention. The ministry also warned of widespread human rights violations by Afghanistan’s de facto authorities.
The advisory urges Canadian citizens currently in Afghanistan to exercise caution and, if they need to relocate to a safer location, review their personal security plans.
The Canadian government added that foreign nationals and individuals with ties to Western countries face increased risks from terrorist groups, including the threat of kidnapping and violence. According to Canada, these individuals also face a higher risk of arbitrary detention by Taliban authorities.
Canada also warned that individuals who had ties to Afghanistan’s former government or who are perceived by Taliban authorities as having violated their laws and regulations may face greater risks.
