Clashes between Taliban forces and the Pakistani army in the border areas of Paktia province and Kurram district of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province began on Saturday evening, September 26, and according to local sources, exchanges of fire between the two sides continued until Sunday morning.
Local sources said that clashes in Ariob-Zazi district of Paktia and the border areas of Kurram involved light and heavy weapons, including mortars and artillery. Separate reports also indicated heavy exchanges of fire along parts of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.
According to local sources, the clashes began following the activities of Pakistani forces in the “Spin Shaga” area and a dispute between the two sides over the establishment of a new border outpost. This account has not been fully confirmed by independent sources.
In contrast, Pakistani security sources have claimed that Taliban forces targeted military positions and civilian areas in the country, including the Kharlachi and Boraki areas of Kurram, with heavy weapons. According to these sources, Pakistani forces responded by targeting Taliban positions with artillery and mortars.
Pakistani security sources also claimed that several Taliban outposts, mortar positions, and defensive trenches were targeted by artillery fire, following which Taliban forces withdrew from several outposts. This claim has not been independently confirmed.
In contrast, sources affiliated with the Taliban described the group’s actions as a response to Pakistan’s border activities.
According to local sources, after several hours of exchanges of fire, the firing stopped by Sunday morning. However, the situation along the Durand Line was still reported to be tense, with forces from both sides on alert. The Information Daily also reported clashes in the Dand Patan area of Paktia and the use of light and heavy weapons by both sides.
The clashes come amid rising border tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban, tensions that have intensified in recent weeks following Pakistani airstrikes in parts of Afghanistan and mutual accusations over the activities of armed groups and border movements.
