Aisha Wahab, a California state legislator, has won the special election for California’s 14th Congressional District, making her the first Afghan-American woman to serve in the United States House of Representatives.
According to published reports, Wahab won the election with more than 53% of the vote, defeating her Democratic opponent, Melissa Hernandez. The election was held to choose a successor to Eric Suarez, the former representative for the 14th Congressional District.
Aisha Wahab’s victory is considered a historic moment for the Afghan-American community, as she will become the first Afghan-American to serve as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
