Afghanistan’s Independent Women’s Protest Movements Coalition held a protest rally on Friday, September 25, condemning the killings and targeted attacks against Hazaras and calling for documentation, investigation, and accountability for these incidents.
At the rally, a number of civil society activists, human rights defenders, and women’s rights activists held placards, candles as symbols of remembrance, and books as symbols of awareness, truth, and the documentation of narratives. They emphasized the need to end violence, discrimination, and targeted attacks against Hazaras.
The protesters said that the killing of civilians and the targeting of ethnic and religious groups must not be allowed to go unaddressed in silence. They called on the international community to take necessary measures to document these cases, support victims, and hold those responsible accountable.
In a statement marking Hazara Genocide Remembrance Day, Afghanistan’s Independent Women’s Protest Movements Coalition expressed sympathy and solidarity with the families of victims, survivors, and the entire Hazara community.
The statement said that Hazaras have repeatedly been subjected to killings, discrimination, repression, and forced displacement throughout Afghanistan’s contemporary history. It added that in recent years, attacks on educational and religious centers and civilian areas have also resulted in significant casualties.
The coalition called on the United Nations, human rights organizations, and the international community to independently and impartially document and investigate targeted attacks against Hazaras, protect civilians, particularly Hazara women and children, and ensure that the perpetrators and those who ordered these incidents are held accountable before judicial authorities.
The coalition also emphasized the right of victims’ families to access truth, justice, redress, and compensation.
The coalition says that justice for Hazaras is an inseparable part of the pursuit of justice, equality, and human rights in Afghanistan, and that killings and discrimination against Hazaras must not be normalized or forgotten.
