The director of the Dogharoun-Taybad border terminal has announced that passenger traffic through the crossing declined by 18 percent in the first six months of the current year compared with the same period last year.
According to Mohsen Rokni, during this period, 224,719 Afghan nationals entered or left Iran through the border crossing. Another 207,110 people entered Afghanistan from Iran or left Afghanistan for Iran, most of whom chose Herat as their destination. Iranian officials say more than one million Iranian and Afghan passengers travel legally through this border crossing each year.
In contrast, international transport traffic at the terminal has increased. Rokni previously said that the movement of transport fleets reached 293,000 trips in 1404, 28 percent higher than in 1403, while 82,404 trips were recorded in the spring of this year, marking a 52 percent increase compared with the same period last year. He attributed the increase to policies aimed at expanding cross-border trade with neighboring countries and improving border infrastructure.
Officials have not stated the reason for the decline in passenger traffic, and the published figures do not show entries and exits separately.
